Fractional Branes and Black Hole Entropy

Neil Constable

McGill

I will first give a brief review of how the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of black holes can be given a microscopic interpretation in terms of D-branes and the open string degrees of freedom living on them. I will then present a recent calculation of the entropy of a particularily enigmatic four dimensional extremal black hole which incorporates the physics of orbifolded field theories and a phenomenon known as fractional branes.
