PICASSO: how it works, present and future

The PICASSO project is based on the principle of detection of nuclear recoils via the superheated-liquid to gas phase transition. Calibrating such a detector, i.e. measuring the amount of active material and its response to various types of radiation, is essential in any application and requires careful studies that will be described. The necessity of constructing large volumes of such detectors poses novel challenges, both in their fabrication and in their operation. We will describe the progress made on these issues and discuss the potential of the new detectors now under construction for cold dark matter observation.
