Homogeneous and heterogeneous molecular assemblies investigated with STM

Meike Stöhr

University of Basel

The arrangement of different organic molecules (ranging from commercially available well-known molecules like C60 to specially designed functional compounds) on conducting substrates was investigated with STM. Further on, the molecule-substrate and the molecule-molecule interaction of homogeneous and heterogeneous molecular assemblies was analyzed. Also the influence of the annealing temperature on the ordering of the molecular films and on the different interactions was studied. The molecular films were either prepared by organic molecular beam epitaxy (OMBE) in UHV or by solution casting under ambient conditions. Depending on the preparation method, (variable temperature) UHV STM or STM at ambient conditions was employed.
