Fifty years of magnetic moment studies in nuclei

I.S. Towner

Queen's University

I will give a fairly gentle (undergraduate level) introduction to the topic of nuclear magnetic moments, culminating in the observation that a number of measured magnetic moments in odd-mass nuclei in the vicinity of the doubly-magic 208Pb nucleus are a puzzle to understand. Then, in seminar mode, I will sketch some more recent theoretical developments that resolve the puzzle.
