Modeling solidification structures using phase-field models on an adaptive grid

Nick Provatas

We simulate a dendritic microstructures using a common phase-field formulation found in the literature. Specifically we are interested in 2D and 3D simulation of dendrites at very low undercooling DT, where DT is a unitless number denoting the difference in temperature between the (initially undercooled) liquid and its melting temperature. that they reproduce benchmarks like solvability theory, a theory that gives the results of the Stefan problem using boundary integral methods. We have also extended these asymptotics to the case of directional solidification.
