Phase Field Modeling of Grain Boundaries

Jim Warren

NIST

Phase field models are now a popular technique for simulating the dynamics of solidifying materials. In applying this method to grain boundaries, interesting mathematical and physical complications arise. In this talk we present the development of a new model of grain boundary formation, with an eye towards the connections of this coarse-grained approach to the more microscopic theories of the deformation of solids.
