Exploring a new peak in the heterotic landscape

We construct new heterotic compactifications on a smooth Calabi-Yau threefold with Z₈ × Z₈ fundamental group. In this talk I will first discuss generalities of supersymmetric compactifications of the heterotic string, then I will give an explicit description of this new class of compactifications and discuss their phenomenological properties.
