Heavy quarkonium near T_c

In 1986, Matsui and Satz noted that J/ψ suppression is an ideal signature to identify the formation of the quark-gluon plasma in a heavy ion collision. Thereafter, many experimental and theoretical works have been carried out on this subject with interesting and challenging results. I will report on the recent progress made to investigate the detailed properties of charmonium states below and above T_c. The inputs of our works are the changes of the gluon field configuration extracted from lattice QCD. We also discuss recent attempts to understand the R_(AA) from heavy ion collision in light of our recent work on the properties of charmonium states near T_c. Relevant proposals to measure precursor phenomena from hadron-nucleus reactions are also discussed.
