Graphene: A Romance of Two Dimensions
Allan MacDonald
Department of Physics University of Texas
Graphene is a honeycomb lattice of carbon atoms with serendipitously
charming electronic properties. This two-dimensional crystal was first
studied theoretically by Phil Wallace in the 1940's, before he joined the
faculty of McGill University. Interest in graphene has exploded following
very recent successful efforts to isolate and probe individual graphene
flakes at the University of Manchester and at Columbia University. I will
review some of the main threads of current graphene research.
