Engineering photons & phonons in optomechanical arrays

Florian Marquardt

University of Erlangen-Nuremberg

In this talk, I will cover some of our recent theoretical predictions for the dynamics of photons and phonons in optomechanical arrays. Such arrays (which are yet to be built) will feature periodically arranged optical and vibrational modes in a 1D or 2D photonic crystal structure. Photons and phonons can hop from site to site and interact with each other. Phenomena that may be observed in these devices include synchronization, the generation of artificial magnetic fields for phonons or photons, and optomechanical 'Dirac' physics similar to graphene.
