Baby galaxies in the early universe

Sadegh Khochfar

Max Planck Institute

Stellar populations of massive present-day galaxies reveal an early and fast formation of their stellar content during the first few billion years of the Universe. In my talk I show results from high resolution simulations of galaxy formation on how this first phase of growth takes place within the currently favored LCDM paradigm. I will show detailed result on the star formation and argue that galaxies at z > 5 go through boosts in star formation triggered by possible mergers, in between phases of accretion regulated star formation. Furthermore, I will discuss the impact of baryons on their surrounding dark matter haloes.
